Karl Marx saw it as bound to disintegrate, like 'any mummy carefully preserved in a hermetically sealed coffin'. The Penguin History of Modern China shows how turbulent that journey has been. The author strikes me as a level-headed seeker of truth. The Penguin History of Modern China shows how turbulent that journey has been. The Penguin History of Modern China shows how turbulent that journey has been. An ever-growing economic powerhouse in the modern world, yet its social progress still firmly bound by the political handcuffs of a system fearful of conceding it's legacy of power and struggling to embrace democracy and real change.

Having not read a great deal on this topic before I can safely report that this was a very good starting point to get a good grasp on the topic as it was written very concisely without being too verbose. The writing is fairly journalistic and impressionistic in tone, full of fairly irrelevant 'colour' and too little analysis, for my taste, and the first two hundred pages were slightly hard going, as I struggled with the byzantine political structures and my lack of knowledge of the period. In the retelling, Chinese history from the peasant revolts against the increasingly beleagured Qing dynasty in the late nineteenth century through to the death of Mao in 1976 if not later! Now it is set to become the most powerful nation on earth. As a tourist, I've been to a few of these places, including randomly discovering memorials etc. The second is that between the struggles for power at the top of the system, detailed in mind-numbingly intricate detail by Fenby, and the sporadic upheavals which convulsed it from the bottom.

Never had I imagined China's modern history would be akin to that of an epic period drama. The writing is fairly journalistic and impressionistic in tone, full of fairly irrelevant 'colour' and too little analysis, for my taste, and the first two hundred pages were slightly hard going, as I struggled with the byzantine political structures and my lack of knowledge of the period. In this regard, the author should always have given surname and forename except for the handful of well known characters Mao, Deng, Empress Dowager etc. If you are interested in recent Chinese history then I would highly recommend this book. His books include Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the China He Lost and Dealing with the Dragon: A Year in the New Hong Kong. This often results in one feeling hopelessly morose, though of course this is no fault of the author's. At times the section on Mao has a mild resemblance to Jung Chang's Mao: The Unknown Story, which appears in this volumes bibliography. His books include Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the China He Lost and Dealing with the Dragon: A Year in the New Hong Kong. Harry -Potter Search results will not contain 'Potter'.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book but could only recommend it to those as hell-bent on learning about Chinese history as I was. Very detailed history of China until 1989. Having not read a great deal on this topic before I can safely report that this was a very good starting point to get a good grasp on the topic as it was written very concisely without being too verbose. For 150 years China has endured as victim to brutality on an unmatched scale, to oppression, to war and to famine. In my opinion the book is not intended for beginners. I can't agree totally with his perspective but it was interesting noting for dangers and risks for a single party political system. Jonathan Fenby's comprehensive account is the definitive guide to this remarkable transformation.

Now it is set to become the most powerful nation on earth. As with any review users should approach reviews critically and where deemed necessary should consult multiple review sources. Jonathan Fenby's comprehensive account is the definitive guide to this remarkable transformation. He was a made a Commander of the British Empire in 2000 for services to journalism and is a knight of both the Legion d'honneur and the French Order of Merit. This may be disappointing for those seeking a less derisive study of Mao's rule, however this chapter lacks the vitriol and scorn found within the Jung Chang book.

For 150 years China has endured as victim of oppression, war, and famine. Click on the cover image above to read some pages of this book! The details of the stories while helped one to imagine what it was liked then, at certain times it feels overwhelming especially for chapters on the civil war period. Beginning in the mid 1850s with China's unequal treaties, and the subsequent foreign intervention and humiliation, Fenby proceeds to describe everything that constitutes the fall described in the title. This book examines China's history to understand how the country went from also-ran to leading power. Sometimes I am just not interested in a three-dimensional portrait of the history biggest assholes. Fenby's book helped me to understand why the present-day Chinese Communist Party places such a premium on stability, and why it is prepared at all costs to maintain a moribund political system that sits uneasily with the market-oriented economic policies pursued by Deng Xiaoping and his successors.

The regime may change, but the basic pattern continues. The description of events has its pros and cons. I had second thoughts when I first picked this one up. Interesting, well written and, given the scale of the task, pacey. The study of the age of Deng is a definite plus within the book, describing the Paramount Leaders outmanoeuvring of Hua Guofeng and his consolidation of power.
