Legends often dramatize certain hopes and fears, showing how stressful and exciting the college experience can be. There was a last minute twist regarding the murderer, but it made sense. The book actually discusses fractals as geometric objects with non-integer dimension, even though the explanation of what this means is not quite correct. This is followed by a discussion of particular types of legends and other folklore genres. A lot of the locations were places that I have lived, and since I study chaos, I feel kind of at home talking about fractals.

With a fascinating topic like this, readers may wonder why the writer chose not to bring readers into the complex philosophical and fractal geometric threads that hold the story together. Moreover, he has essentially self-published this book. As the evidence mounts, Pepper fears that his favorite math professor may be the next target.

As for the mathematics - Mandelbrot and Benoit sets, chaos, fractional dimensions, random walks, discussions of business applications such as fundamental versus technical analysis, weather prediction and crop markets - the basic concepts are presented in a lucid, simple and non-threatening fashion. However, once I had a printed copy of the book and could read far enough into it to learn to like the character and be interested in the mystery, I was hooked. The fixings are so good that a main dish plot becomes almost secondary but I can tell you that Cohen has done a fine job with that as well! Pepper Keane is a former Marine, former federal prosecutor and current Private Investigator living near Boulder, Colorado. Pepper crosses and re-crosses the trails that suspects have left, linking mathematics, economics and philosophy in his search for clues.

It was amazing how much this book overlapped with my own life and interests. Here's a first novel based on a completely fascinating premise that presents interesting, realistic and superbly developed characters; that develops a heart-warming romantic relationship complete with all the bumps, bruises and detours of reality; that avoids prurient sex and violence as completely unnecessary to the advancement of a well-written novel; and does it all with well crafted narrative and descriptive writing as well as positively hilarious dialogue! Even Pepper, it seems, is scratching his head. Jayne feels sure that the murders are not coincidence. I also give it very high ratings as a mystery, a genre I am generally very critical of, because it achieved the difficult goal of being clever enough to keep me from figuring out the solution too early even though all of the clues were really there. I disliked the protagonist and I was annoyed by the casual sexism I don't need to know the breast size of every female in the book.

This amount is subject to change until you make payment. This was not most well-written book I've read, especially the awful dialogue, but the personality of the main character made it quite an enjoyable read. This review is available to non-members for a limited time. Pepper is an interesting character, with a cast of equally interesting friends and family.

Kenji Siratori comes from within the history of radical literature, but his youth, cultural context, and understanding of the futurity of digital technologies positions him as the herald of a new literary dawn. I blew past them, then blew my nose. I enjoyed the math connection, and the main characters were well developed. Perhaps in his next attempt, he will feel comfortable enough to splash his canvas with bold strokes and dazzling colors. The price may be the seller's own price elsewhere or another seller's price. I finished it last week and I don't remember who dun it! From United Kingdom to U. It is easy to read it actually took me only a couple of days to finish , interesting storyline and I really loved the ending. However, very few writers are gifted enough to write a great first novel and Cohen definitely has potential for the future, and in the meantime The Fractal Murders has much to commend it. Don't let the geometry keep you from reading an enjoyable solid analytical mystery that plainly works on several hyperbolic levels with a final twist in which the sum of the angles of a triangle do not equal 180 degrees. I even learned something about fractal geometry and philosophy along with way without it miring the plot. But when Boulder, Colorado, math professor Jayne Smyers discovers each victim had been an expert in the mathematical field known as fractal geometry, she knows their deaths can't be coincidences. His hero is Pepper Keane, a burned-out former boxer, Marine attorney, U.

On the downside at least from my point of view is that this is a 'guy' book. I fabricate the apoptosis of T. Note May 2004 : The book has just been reissued in a nice new Pointless observation: By coincidence, has a superficially similar plot. That is, a guy who smokes like a volcano, drinks bourbon in underground bars full of mobsters and hookers, wears long coats and 30's hats, maybe falls for a femme fatale, and lives alone in a small apartment.
